[The incumbent] faces three challengers for his seat, but only one gives much hope. Rich Goodman is 27 and would be, by a big stretch, the youngest member of the council he seeks to join. He does not have much in the way of practical experience, but he is earnest and well versed in some of the larger issues before the city. He grasps the nuances of public safety funding, for instance, and he has a background in economics that would serve him well. Goodman is a long shot, but those with long memories will recall that a young Zev Yaroslavsky made his way into L.A. politics this way a few decades back. The Times endorses Goodman in the 6th District

Here’s what the L.A. Daily News had to say about it:

‎”The only other non-incumbents the Times has endorsed for the 2011 municipal election are Rudy Martinez for District 14….and Rich Goodman for District 6 — the single real surprise.”

Let’s continue to surprise our community and make the necessary changes our community needs to move forward, a new strong leadership. Let’s continue forward on our movement to improve the Valley!

With only 9 days remaining, please consider making a small donation to make sure we have the resources to win this election for our community.

The LA Weekly wrote a piece starting off opening with Rich Goodman.

Rich Goodman is the face of the lost generation, college graduates who will see a significant reduction in income compared with other age groups because they entered the job market during a recession. That is, if they can get hired.

So it’s no surprise that, although Goodman, 27, recently sold an e-commerce startup, his priority is job creation — his job, and those of others.

Influenced by his mother, a Mexican immigrant who believes in community involvement, Goodman is taking on incumbent Tony Cardenas San Fernando Valley’s L.A. City Council District 6…

Thank you to Tibby Rothman from L.A. Weekly for taking her time to write such a thoughtful piece. Let’s keep it moving!

So this is great news, as the campaign picks up speed, it turns out the group L.A. Clean Sweep has endorsed me, Rich Goodman for the March 8th, 2011 election.

L.A. Clean Sweep represents an important endorsement for this campaign since it is a non-partisan citywide coalition of community group and activists working for change at City Hall. This campaign is part of a movement for the citizens of Los Angeles to regain representation, which is why this campaign accepts only personal donations and not donations from special interests or businesses. It is the individuals of Los Angeles who our elected representatives should be beholden to and no one else.

In the next month and a half, we will continue going door to door, talking to ordinary citizens about how to best represent them, learning how to regain interest in our local government.

If you would like to help out volunteering knocking on doors, or calling people, please feel free to email us at info@goodman4lacitycouncil.com or call us at 818-835-2011.

Together we can make that difference. Thank you to the L.A. Clean Sweep endorsement committee for your vote of confidence.

Last night I had the opportunity to go to the Valley Vote meeting (http://www.valleyvote.org/) where we had Stuart Waldman from The Valley Industry and Commerce Association (VICA) speaking about the importance of having proper representation in the San Fernando Valley and about all the hard work he and his Association have been doing in making sure we have a fair share of resources and money.

He asked a very important question: “How many people feel the Valley gets its fair share?”

Indeed no one raised their hand, although some did say the situation has gotten a bit better, we still have a lot of work to do to make sure our districts in the Valley get represented properly. We need to go above and beyond what has been done thus far to accomplish this.

We also had some amazing people from Granada Hills Charter School, which apparently is an outstanding school talking about their new project to expand to a second school which is coming up for a vote.

Notable acheivements of Granada Hills Charter School is how they spend $2,000 less per pupil, pay their teachers higher than LAUSD, but still manage to have be one of the best performing schools in Los Angeles. Just amazing. We need more successes for Los Angeles.

Notable to me was VICA’s involvement in the redistricting of the San Fernando Valley that will be taking place with the new redistricting commission of the state, and the principles they have laid out.

This got me thinking about how redistricting also needs to be improved here in our own city of Los Angeles.

The districts are so gerrymandered it’s ridiculous, District 6 looks like a cut out of origami.

This practice needs to be fixed. I would like to see the same attention taking place at the city level to make sure we have fair redistricting.

I’m primarily fond of this principle from VICA:

All recognized communities should be kept together as part of the compact and contiguous districts which shall recognize geographic features and natural boundaries.

Here’s the flyer about my campaign I was able to hand out, let me know what you think. Long live Los Angeles!

A while back, when I really started getting involved in city governance issues and realized how important city government is in impacting our lives — from public education to safer streets, from public parks to public libraries, from clean streets and a prosperous local economy — I realized it was very important to understand as much as possible about how the system worked.

The League of Women’s Voters put out an amazing PDF that explains in detail the structure of Los Angeles government and the history behind it.

This should be a required crash course for anyone wanting to get involved, or anyone living in LA for that matter. How this city is run affects all of us that live in Los Angeles.

Without further ado, here’s the PDF, you can view it and download it as you wish.

This letter just came in from the City of Los Angeles. We are officially on the ballot! Let’s keep it moving!
